We had an amazing summer at CAP! Our program ran from July 8th - August 1st. With over 50 students involved, this was our biggest summer yet! Our theme this year was "Can You TennesSEE Me?". We learned all about Tennessee as well as taking several fieldtrips throughout our area. We visited the Nissan Plant where we were able to see how they make a car, toured the TN Sports Hall of Fame, and took weekly trips to the YMCA where we learned how to swim. It was a busy, active, and fun-filled summer!
On a beautiful spring day in April several CAP students transformed into butterflies, Santa, a court jester, a cow and many more often characters to prepare themselves for their debut in the CAP "Harlem Shake" video. With the help and direction of Dee Kimbrell and Stacey Flowers, the students jumped and danced with joy. The final result (and it IS Oscar worthy) can be seen by visiting YouTube. We hope you will watch it and enjoy!

Last week we celebrated Volunteer Appreciation Week at CAP and we had a wonderful time. We have so many amazing volunteers and they are the backbone of our organization.

We started the week with decorating our halls complete with posters, balloons, and streamers. On Thursday we had our 1st Annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. There were over 25 in attendance and Mr. Bailey was present to inspire all of us with his words and motivation.

Each week we have volunteers arrive at CAP to help with classroom management, meal preparation, cleaning duties, fieldtrips, arts/crafts, tutoring, and writing lesson plans. Many of them volunteer several hours per week, helping Mr. Bailey carry through with his mission at CAP. So, THANK YOU! Thank you for being so generous with your time. Thank you for being so kind with your words. Thank you for being so available for our kids! Although it may not always be evident at this exact moment, our volunteers are having a HUGE impact that will last a lifetime. Thank you, CAP Volunteers!! You ROCK!
First, let me say, these kids had a blast! There were numerous exhibits set up throughout various classrooms full of hands-on activities. We were able to not only learn something but we were also able to have a great time learning about science. When we can touch and use our hands, we are able to retain so much more than just sitting behind a desk.

Just a few activities we got to participate in while at the Expo were learning how important it is to wash our hands, how to make a mold from our teeth, view the inside of real livers and kidneys, play in wet sand, and play "Operation" on a life-size game with life-size bones. These were only a few of the amazing experiences we had the opportunity to enjoy at the Science and Math Expo. Thank you, Volunteer State Community College for offering such a wonderful event for our community!
Last week, Brandon Stacey finished an individualized project of designing and building a model of the luxury ocean liner from recycled materials. Brandon is a 6th grade student at Children Are People, Inc. a non-profit after school program in Gallatin, TN.

Brandon developed a fascination with the story of the Titanic after seeing his cousin perform in the Circle Players 100 year celebration performance at TPAC in 2012. After seeing Brandon’s passion for the subject, an individualized project was developed for him that incorporated reading, history, science, mathematics, physics, current events and art all centered around the topic of the RMS Titanic.

When asked about the Australian Titanic II project, Brandon replied, “I sure hope they learn from the first Titanic’s mistakes!” One thing is certain, Brandon Stacey sure has!

This past Saturday was the start of our 2013 DALE CARNEGIE course for our Middle and High school students. This is an amazing program from which all young people can benefit. We are proud to partner with Dale Carnegie Training of Nashville and the Gap Foundation to bring this program to our students at no charge. Here's some information on what the program is....

Generation.Next is designed to prepare young people for the real world. It gives them the skills they need to reach their goals and live up to their full potential - at school, home, and work.
This exciting, intensive, three-week seminar is designed to challenge and inspire your youth. Each week we will unpack Dale Carnegie’s principles through a series of challenges. Each week builds on the one previous, so it is imperative that each participant attends every session.

The CAP Angel Program was successful in having all of our students adopted for the holiday season. However, we could not have done this without the help of so many wonderful "Angels" throughout our community. An entire week was spent taking in, wrapping, and sorting the gifts. At the end of the week, we loaded up the bus and Mr. Roy drove to each home throughout Gallatin. At many destinations there were excited and eager children awaiting our arrival, complete with huge grins across their faces. Thank you again to all the volunteers who helped put this into action and thank you to all the wonderful families, businesses, and organizations who so graciously gave to our Christmas Angel Program. It is amazing what we can accomplish in this world when so many are willing to step up to help.
First, Ms. Dee read the book How Do You Hug a Porcupine?. Next, the children were able to make their very own porcupines and they were VERY creative! We even had porcupines with mohawks! The kids laughed, painted, made jokes, and just had some "porcupine fun". It was a great day in K/1 with our great Reading Specialist, Ms. Dee! Thank you, Ms. Dee for everything you do for the children at CAP. By the way, do you know how to hug a porcupine? VERY CAREFULLY! :)

During her winter break, Vernicia did not spend her days relaxing like most college students. Instead, thanks to Mr. Bailey, arrangements were made for her to shadow Dr. Dickerson, a local cardiologist. This was a wonderful experience for Vernicia and only reaffirmed her aspirations to go into the medical field. Way to go, Vernicia!! We are so proud of you!!
The kids had a great time with their creations and of course, they had an even better time gobbling them up. We started with a bowl full of candy, some vanilla icing, and a waffle cone "canvas". The kids went to town! Twenty minutes later, their creations were made. Ten minutes after that, they were all gone. Fun times at CAP!
Children Are People had a great time at the Gallatin Christmas Parade on Saturday. With over 35 children who participated and a group of parent volunteers, CAP was the recipient of the "Best Themed Float" Award. This years theme for the parade was "Christmas Around the World". There were more than 125 entries which passed through downtown Gallatin amongst thousands of spectators. Way to go, CAP PTO!! Your hard work paid off!
